Saddleworth Historical Society

Saddleworth Historical Society was established in 1966 with key aims to:-

  • document the history of Saddleworth,
  • promote an interest in the area’s past, and to
  • facilitate historical research.

The Society’s interest and activities are wide and varied and encompass studies into prehistory and archaeology, landscape and settlement, family history, the domestic textile industry, the industrial revolution and its impact of the growth of the Saddleworth villages in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Society arranges lectures and events and publishes a quarterly Bulletin containing articles on a wide variety of local historical topics. Over the years the Society has published over twenty books relating to the history of the area, many of which are still in print.
